Dogs and cats on New Year's Eve: Last minute tips against the fear of fireworks
The exciting Christmas celebrations are barely over when the next challenge approaches: New Year's Eve. While the last few years have been a real blessing for our loved ones due to the Corona restrictions, this year will unfortunately be very extreme.
Many animals react with panic to the rockets and firecrackers that are set off at midnight because they cannot classify the flashes of light and noises and feel threatened and afraid.
Therefore, it would be ideal if your dog heard as little of the noise outside as possible. So close all the windows well before midnight, draw the curtains and - if you have them - lower the blinds. This will dampen noises and flashes of light.
Experts also recommend playing quiet classical music, as it has a calming effect on animals. We also convey security to our pets by sticking to the usual daily routine. You should only significantly limit the amount of free running for cats on this day and keep your dog on a leash when walking. Unfortunately, there are a few trigger-happy people in every neighborhood who set off fireworks days in advance despite the ban.
Dogs or cats running around freely could get scared and run away in panic. So bring your outdoor cats into the house at midday and take your dog for a last walk in the early evening. Dog and cat owners should also be aware that they cannot leave their animals alone at home on New Year's Eve. Your presence and a calm attitude are particularly important to take away your pet's fear of the noise. So avoid comforting or pitying your dog or cat while the party is going on outside. Your pet will get the impression that something really bad must be going on out there if you suddenly start paying so much attention to it.
It’s better to appear completely relaxed:
Of course, your dog can sit very close to you and you can radiate security.
Once the nightmare is over, it's time to welcome the New Year with an extra treat. But be careful: Even days later, you still need to be careful, as leftover firecrackers can still be set off.
